What is the CLT exam?

The Classic Learning Test (CLT) is a standardized college entrance exam designed as an alternative to the SAT and ACT. It assesses critical thinking, reading comprehension, grammar, and mathematical reasoning through content drawn from classic literature, historical texts, and philosophy. It was founded in 2015 by Jeremy Tate.

How is the CLT scored?

The CLT is scored on a scale of 0 to 120. The test has three sections — Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Skills, and Grammar/Writing — each worth up to 40 points. There is no pass/fail; scores are used for college admissions and scholarship decisions.

How much does the CLT cost?

The CLT costs $69 as of early 2026. The price is scheduled to increase to $112 starting June 1, 2026. Fee waivers are available for students with financial need.

How does the CLT compare to the SAT and ACT?
