Frequently Asked Questions
What are executive functions?
Executive functions are cognitive processes managed by the prefrontal cortex that enable goal-directed behavior: working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, planning, task initiation, emotional regulation, and self-monitoring.
Is executive dysfunction the same as ADHD?
ADHD is fundamentally a disorder of executive function, but executive dysfunction can also occur with autism, depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic stress, and brain injuries. Not everyone with executive dysfunction has ADHD.
What is time blindness?
Time blindness is the difficulty in perceiving and estimating the passage of time. It is common in ADHD and leads to chronic lateness, underestimating how long tasks take, and difficulty planning. External tools like timers and visual schedules help compensate.
Can executive function be improved?
While you can’t fundamentally rewire executive function, you can build external systems (checklists, timers, routines), use medication if ADHD is present, and develop compensatory strategies. Body doubling, breaking tasks into micro-steps, and structured environments all help.
