CDIP Study Plan: 10-Week Schedule

Week-by-week preparation for the CDIP exam

Use this flexible 10-week plan to cover the major CDIP content areas, practice retrieval, and reserve time for targeted remediation. Adjust the pace to your experience and official testing date.

Weeks 1–2: coding and documentation foundations

Map principal and secondary diagnoses, sequencing rules, provider documentation, and working/final DRG differences. Use the applicable official coding guidelines. For each fictional case, separate what is documented from what is merely suggested by a laboratory result.

Weeks 3–4: record review and clarification

Practice identifying conflicting information, missing specificity, and possible clinical validation issues. Write neutral clarification requests and explain why leading alternatives are unsuitable. Record review is the largest range in the currently linked blueprint, so give it deliberate attention.

Weeks 5–6: education and leadership

Create a provider-education outline with one measurable objective. Practice escalation of unanswered queries, collaboration with physician champions, and communication with coding staff. Explain how accurate documentation supports clinical communication and quality reporting as well as reimbursement.

Weeks 7–8: metrics and compliance

Calculate fictional response rates and interpret case-mix or productivity trends. Check definitions and denominators before comparing results. Examine confidentiality, query retention, audits, technology-assisted review, and second-level escalation using current professional standards.

Weeks 9–10: mixed-domain practice

Use unfamiliar scenarios across all five domains and justify each answer. Revisit weak areas by concept, rather than memorizing repeated questions. Rehearse a three-hour budget for 140 items and reserve review time; your practice score is a learning signal, not the official scaled result.

A Weekly Learning Routine

  • Two concept-review sessions: explain the domain without rereading
  • Two application sessions: justify an action in an unfamiliar scenario
  • One mixed quiz: log the domain, reasoning error, source, and next review
  • One weekly review: revisit persistent gaps and adjust the schedule

Tips

  • Use the current official exam content outline as your master checklist
  • Schedule short, consistent study blocks
  • Practice application and professional judgment, not memorization alone
  • Complete at least one timed mixed-domain practice session
  • Confirm current exam policies with the certifying organization

Frequently Asked Questions

Who administers the CDIP certification?

The CDIP credential is administered by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Candidates should always confirm current eligibility, fees, testing windows, and policies with the certifying organization.

Who is this study guide for?

This guide is written for health information, coding, nursing, and other professionals preparing for AHIMA’s documentation integrity credential.

How should I use the practice questions?

Use them diagnostically: identify weak domains, review the underlying concept, and revisit missed questions until you can explain why each answer choice is correct or incorrect.

Adapt the Schedule to Your Situation

This ten-week schedule is a suggested study structure, not a sponsor requirement. Candidates with less experience may need more time; those with strong domain knowledge may use it for targeted review. Schedule the official examination only after confirming eligibility and your authorization window.
