CDIP Exam Content Outline
Domains, study priorities, and blueprint use
The official CDIP content outline is the best scope document for preparation. Turn each domain into a checklist and use the current official blueprint for any published weights.
Core Domains
- Clinical coding practice
- Education and leadership development
- Record review and document clarification
- CDI metrics and statistics
- Compliance and ethical documentation practice
Current Published Domain Weights
The AHIMA outline currently linked from the CDIP page states percentage ranges, not fixed question counts. These ranges describe blueprint allocation; they are not readiness targets or a raw passing percentage.
| Study area | Official allocation | Preparation task |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical coding practice | 15–18% | Practice sequencing and working-versus-final DRG reconciliation. |
| Education and leadership | 21–26% | Choose an audience, educational objective, and measure of effective learning. |
| Record review and clarification | 27–33% | Identify an ambiguity, prioritize review, and construct an appropriate clarification approach. |
| CDI metrics and statistics | 8–11% | Interpret numerators, denominators, reporting periods, and trend limitations. |
| Compliance | 18–23% | Assess query integrity, clinical validation, technology risks, and escalation. |
Turn the Outline into an Error Log
For each missed question, record the component or domain, the concept tested, the clue you overlooked, and the source to revisit. Mark a topic ready only when you can apply it to a new scenario. This avoids mistaking familiar wording for transferable knowledge.
How to Use the Blueprint
- Download the current official outline before you begin
- Allocate study time according to official weights and your weak areas
- Map every missed practice question to a domain
- Recheck the official outline shortly before the exam for revisions
A Practical Study Matrix
For every domain, track three items: concepts you can explain, questions you can apply correctly, and topics requiring remediation. A domain is not finished merely because it has been read once.
