Overview

The FNP-BC (from ANCC) is a primary care NP certification. The ENP (from AANPCB) is a specialty certification for FNPs who practice in emergency care. They’re complementary — most ENP candidates already hold FNP certification.

Which Should You Choose?

You need BOTH if you practice emergency care as an NP:

1. First earn FNP-BC (or AANP FNP) — this is your base NP certification
2. Then add ENP — this validates your emergency specialty knowledge

Choose FNP-BC first if:

• •You want to practice in primary care
• •You need the base NP certification for licensure

Add ENP later if:

• •You work in an emergency department
• •You want to demonstrate emergency specialty competency
