Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CRT exam?
The CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) credential is earned by passing the NBRC Therapist Multiple-Choice (TMC) Examination at the low cut score. It is the entry-level respiratory therapy credential.
How many questions are on the CRT exam?
The TMC exam has 160 multiple-choice questions (140 scored + 20 pretest) with a 3-hour time limit. The same exam is used for both CRT and RRT — the difference is the cut score achieved.
How much does the CRT exam cost?
The TMC exam costs $190 for new applicants and $150 for repeat applicants. The CRT and RRT credentials are based on the same exam at different cut scores.
What are the eligibility requirements for the CRT?
Candidates must be 18+ and graduate from a CoARC-accredited respiratory therapy program with a minimum associate degree. CRT/RRT credentials are used for licensure in all 49 states that regulate respiratory care.
