DANB CDA Exam Content Outline

Domains, study priorities, and blueprint use

The official DANB CDA content outline is the best scope document for preparation. Turn each domain into a checklist and use the current official blueprint for any published weights.

Core Domains

  • GC: patient evaluation, histories, and documentation
  • GC: patient management and practice administration
  • GC: chairside dentistry, instrument transfer, and field control
  • GC: dental materials and handling
  • ICE: disease transmission and cross-contamination prevention
  • ICE: instrument/device processing and occupational safety
  • RHS: imaging purpose, technique, protection, and infection prevention

Current Published Domain Weights

DANB publishes separate GC, ICE, and RHS outlines. Each percentage below is within its named component. Do not add percentages across components or treat a GC weight as a combined-CDA weight.

Study area Official allocation Preparation task
GC: evaluation 17% of GC Connect histories, observations, documentation, and escalation.
GC: patient management and administration 17% of GC Practice communication, records, consent, and office responsibilities.
GC: chairside dentistry 50% of GC Review procedure sequences, tray setup, transfer, and field control.
GC: dental materials 16% of GC Use manufacturer-specific handling, indications, and storage principles.
ICE: disease transmission 20% of ICE Distinguish routes of transmission and the purpose of precautions.
ICE: cross-contamination prevention 34% of ICE Trace clean and contaminated zones, hands, surfaces, and barriers.
ICE: instruments and devices 26% of ICE Explain processing sequence, monitoring, and response to failures.
ICE: occupational safety 20% of ICE Review exposure prevention, response, and safe workplace practices.
RHS: purpose and technique 50% of RHS Choose appropriate techniques and identify avoidable image errors.
RHS: radiation characteristics and protection 25% of RHS Explain selection, justification, protection, and quality assurance.
RHS: infection prevention and control 25% of RHS Apply contamination controls throughout the imaging workflow.

Turn the Outline into an Error Log

For each missed question, record the component or domain, the concept tested, the clue you overlooked, and the source to revisit. Mark a topic ready only when you can apply it to a new scenario. This avoids mistaking familiar wording for transferable knowledge.

How to Use the Blueprint

  • Download the current official outline before you begin
  • Allocate study time according to official weights and your weak areas
  • Map every missed practice question to a domain
  • Recheck the official outline shortly before the exam for revisions

A Practical Study Matrix

For every domain, track three items: concepts you can explain, questions you can apply correctly, and topics requiring remediation. A domain is not finished merely because it has been read once.
