CDIP Exam Content Outline

Domains, study priorities, and blueprint use

The official CDIP content outline is the best scope document for preparation. Turn each domain into a checklist and use the current official blueprint for any published weights.

Core Domains

  • Clinical coding practice
  • Education and leadership development
  • Record review and document clarification
  • CDI metrics and statistics
  • Compliance and ethical documentation practice

Current Published Domain Weights

The AHIMA outline currently linked from the CDIP page states percentage ranges, not fixed question counts. These ranges describe blueprint allocation; they are not readiness targets or a raw passing percentage.

Study area Official allocation Preparation task
Clinical coding practice 15–18% Practice sequencing and working-versus-final DRG reconciliation.
Education and leadership 21–26% Choose an audience, educational objective, and measure of effective learning.
Record review and clarification 27–33% Identify an ambiguity, prioritize review, and construct an appropriate clarification approach.
CDI metrics and statistics 8–11% Interpret numerators, denominators, reporting periods, and trend limitations.
Compliance 18–23% Assess query integrity, clinical validation, technology risks, and escalation.

Turn the Outline into an Error Log

For each missed question, record the component or domain, the concept tested, the clue you overlooked, and the source to revisit. Mark a topic ready only when you can apply it to a new scenario. This avoids mistaking familiar wording for transferable knowledge.

How to Use the Blueprint

  • Download the current official outline before you begin
  • Allocate study time according to official weights and your weak areas
  • Map every missed practice question to a domain
  • Recheck the official outline shortly before the exam for revisions

A Practical Study Matrix

For every domain, track three items: concepts you can explain, questions you can apply correctly, and topics requiring remediation. A domain is not finished merely because it has been read once.
