CDA-DANB Study Plan: 10-Week Schedule
Week-by-week preparation for the CDA-DANB exam
Use this flexible 10-week plan to cover the major CDA-DANB content areas, practice retrieval, and reserve time for targeted remediation. Adjust the pace to your experience and official testing date.
Weeks 1–2: component map and patient evaluation
Confirm whether you are scheduling all components together or separately. Download each outline and make separate GC, ICE, and RHS checklists. Practice histories, charting, patient communication, and recognizing when a dentist or supervisor must evaluate a concern.
Weeks 3–4: chairside dentistry and dental materials
Work through fictional procedure sequences, tray preparation, instrument transfer, field control, and material handling. For each step, explain its purpose and what could go wrong. Chairside dentistry accounts for half of the GC outline, not half of the entire combined CDA examination.
Weeks 5–6: infection control
Trace an instrument from contaminated collection through processing and storage. Explain differences between cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization; study cross-contamination prevention and occupational safety. Use current official references and manufacturer instructions instead of memorizing universal cycle settings.
Weeks 7–8: radiation health and safety
Practice identifying image errors, selecting appropriate techniques, and applying infection controls in imaging. Explain the reason for each correction and avoid retakes that do not address the cause. Confirm state-specific radiography requirements independently of your exam study.
Weeks 9–10: integrated preparation
Mix questions across the three components but track results separately. Rehearse each component’s time budget and retain a list of recurring reasoning errors. Complete final eligibility, CPR, identification, appointment, and authorization-window checks before exam day.
A Weekly Learning Routine
- Two concept-review sessions: explain the domain without rereading
- Two application sessions: justify an action in an unfamiliar scenario
- One mixed quiz: log the domain, reasoning error, source, and next review
- One weekly review: revisit persistent gaps and adjust the schedule
Tips
- Use the current official exam content outline as your master checklist
- Schedule short, consistent study blocks
- Practice application and professional judgment, not memorization alone
- Complete at least one timed mixed-domain practice session
- Confirm current exam policies with the certifying organization
Frequently Asked Questions
Who administers the CDA-DANB certification?
The CDA-DANB credential is administered by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Candidates should always confirm current eligibility, fees, testing windows, and policies with the certifying organization.
Who is this study guide for?
This guide is written for dental assistants preparing for DANB’s CDA component examinations and checking the applicable education, experience, and CPR pathway.
How should I use the practice questions?
Use them diagnostically: identify weak domains, review the underlying concept, and revisit missed questions until you can explain why each answer choice is correct or incorrect.
Adapt the Schedule to Your Situation
This ten-week schedule is a suggested study structure, not a sponsor requirement. Candidates with less experience may need more time; those with strong domain knowledge may use it for targeted review. Schedule the official examination only after confirming eligibility and your authorization window.
